Look for specialists who will fit your type and scale of business. Don’t go for general business experts, or professionals allied to unrelated industries. Choose a consultant who is an expert in your line of business or has experience in similar industries. Before finally recruiting the consultant, ask for at least three client references. Check upon the performance of the plan writer with the referred clients. Did the consultant stick to his original fee estimates? Was the plan submitted within the deadline and did it serve the purpose for which it was written? Positive answers to these questions will build your confidence in the chosen consultant.
Most business plan consultants work on a contract basis. Once you select the candidate or company, draw up a legal contract detailing all aspects of the service like, fee estimate, hourly rate or flat fee, when it will be paid and under what condition. Describe the entire gamut of services to be provided by the consultant to avoid later disputes.
Selecting the right business plan consultant is a job half-done. You must then work closely with the chosen professional, make him understand your needs and aspirations and provide him with the data and other inputs to complete the business plan in accordance with your expectations. A well-crafted and winning business plan is a joint effort; it must look professional as well as reflect your signature style.
